In a personal series of 35 patients diverticular disease of the colon was shown to be the most common cause of profuse bleeding; nevertheless, it accounted for only half the cases in this series. A wide variety of other lesions may be responsible for bleeding, and it is important that each patient should be very carefully assessed before the acceptance of diverticular disease as the cause of the haemorrhage.
