Iodophors are used widely in industry, medicine and the home, because iodine released from them is germicidal without being irritant. Povidone iodine is used as a skin disinfectant in the operating theatres at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Estimation of the output of urinary iodine in surgeons and sisters after their use of this material shows an increase. Iodineinduced thyrotoxicosis is unlikely to occur in this group.
