With continuing improvements in cytological, histological and frozen section techniques, the clinician is becoming increasingly dependent upon the histologist for early and accurate diagnosis of malignant lesions. Newer techniques, using direct smears, fluid aspiration and needle and drill biopsy, will sometimes allow accurate diagnosis to be established with minimal handling of or interference with a tumour mass. This probably reduces the risk of tumour dissemination when compared with more traditional biopsy procedures. When, as with most deep tissue masses, more formal incisional or excisional biopsy is required, the individual circumstances should be assessed and certain appropriate precautions should be taken in order to obtain the most accurate information with a minimum of risk. The scope, suitability accuracy and safety of the various available procedures are outlined in this paper .
