Gammahydroxybutyrate is a long‐acting intravenous anœsthetic agent. It has been used for 200 anœsthetics in 174 children aged from seven weeks to 16 years at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Its use for neuroradiological procedures, laryngeal microsurgery, Iaryngoscopy, bronchosropy and bronchography constituted the major part of the trial. Gammahydroxybutyrate was found to be particularly useful for laryngeal operations because at produced good jaw relaxation without the use of muscle relaxants, so that the larynx could be well visualized with the patient breathing spontaneously. This property was also useful for bronchoscopy. The main disadvantage was the high incidence of vomiting. Antiemetics were not routinely used in this trial .
