A study of the cases of fractured femoral shaft treated by the insertion of a Kuntscher rod over the five‐year period 1963 to 1967 at the Midalemore Hospital, Auckland, is presented. At the time of review all operations had been curried out at least twelve months previously. The results of treatment have been considered an relation to the time of operation. Delayed internal fixation, that is, operation about 10 aays after the initial injury, did not significantly improve the rate of union of the fracture, and was associated with a high incidence of infection .
