The causes of acute small bowel obstruction and the results of its present‐day treatment are reviewed in the light of the case histories of 360 patients who presented with 385 episodes of this condition during the seven‐year period 1959–1965. Support is given for the practice of early operation in the management, and the question of bowel deflation during operation is discussed.
