Alkali tends to cause œsophageal strictures, while acid has its main effect on the stomach. The reasons for this are briefly discussed. The presentation and management of acid gastric strictures are described. The management of œsophageal strictures is discussed in detail, under the headings of (a) early management, (b) management of the established stricture, (c) treatment of the impassable stricture. Reference is made to the technique of colon replacement of the œsophagus and to the excision of local residual strictures.
