In adults with acute upper airway obstruction and in whom endotracheal, intubation is impossible, temporary laryngotomy is a simpler and safer alternative to emergency tracheostomy. A new instrument is described which permits temporary laryngotomy to be performed with speed and safety in such an emergency.
