Summary Measurements of blood oxygen saturation and dye‐dilution studies in patients with varicose veins have failed to support the standard theories of the aetiology of this condition. No real evidence has been obtained to indicate that this condition may be due to the presence of abnormal arteriovenous communications. By a process of exclusion, it has been indicated that the primary pathology may lie in the vein wall.
