Summary Experimental heart‐lung by‐pass surgery presents some problems not generally encountered in human open‐heart surgery, not the least of these being the additional burden this essential surgery places on an already hard‐pressed by‐pass unit. In evolving a simpler and more satisfactory technique for use in the experimental laboratory various modifications were made to the technique generally employed at Green Lane Hospital. These modifications, and the underlying reasons for making them are outlined.
