Summary 1. Patterns of liver injury, their causes, anatomy and mortality are reviewed. 2. Twenty‐nine cases managed at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital between 1958 and 1963 are analysed. The predominance of blunt trauma is noted. The overall mortality of 48 per cent. and the 62 per cent. mortality for blunt trauma are presented as being capable of improvement. 3. A regime of management is presented. 4. Several cases from the literature and two recent cases from this hospital are cited as examples of the application of this regime.
