S ummary (a) Seventeen cases of sigmoid volvulus are reviewed. (b) The various methods of treatment are considered. (c) The mechanism of torsion is studied. (d) The clinical picture is carefully outlined showing its characteristic course. (e) It is shown that there are fairly definite indications of the suspicion or presence of gangrene. (f) A conservative emergency approach of intubation is favoured. (g) It is suggested that in the presence of gangrene the Mikulicz procedure be replaced by resection with closure and invagination of the distal stump and proximal terminal colostomy.
