S ummary 1. The problems of evacuation and the establishment of forward surgical centres in Italy are contrasted with those in the Western Desert. 2. Some principles in the treatment of the main types of battle casualties are discussed: ( a ) abdominal wounds, ( b ) chest wounds, ( c ) wounds of the extremities and injuries of the popliteal artery.
