Summary .1. Transurethral resection is indicated, and open operation contra‐indicated, in the small fibrous prostate and prostatic carcinoma. 2. It is the treatment of election of the small adenomatous prostate requiring operation. 3. It is preferable to prostatectomy in the aged patient and the poor surgical risk, and to cystostomy where prostatectomy is out of the question. Its indications otherwise are the same as for prostatectomy, the extent of its use depending on the attitude and technical qualifications of the surgeon. 4. When resection is employed in the treatment of simple prostatic hypertrophy, the prospects of permanent cure depend on the completeness of the resection and the patient's expectancy of life.
