The Wellcome Trust is the world's largest medical research charity. Investment by the Trust in research in Australia and New Zealand has contributed very substantially to local research capacity through support of people, equipment and programmes. Further, the Trust's funding has successfully leveraged additional investment from both government and charitable foundations. Current initiatives are focused on development of research partnerships between Australasia and our regional neighbours. (Intern Med J 2004; 34: 211−214)
