Examination with a radial echoendoscope is an important part of endoscopic ultrasonography. Mechanical radial systems have been used since the initiation of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) but a new generation of electronic array radial echoendoscopes offers some potential advantages. The lack of moving parts should improve the reliability and durability of the echoendoscope and with the electronic array, Doppler functions are possible. To date, however, no studies have conuincingly shown that the images are of superior quality or that diagnosis is improved with the electronic array systems versus the mechanical sector scanning echoendoscopes.
