After Charles Symonds first reported stent therapy for malignant esophageal stricuture in 1885, several kinds of endoprosthesis, such as latex, silicone has been introduced in the clinical fields and improved feeding problems, etc. After the introduction of self‐expandable metallic stent (SEMS) in the beginning of 1990s, SEMS has changed clinical treatment dramatically. It resolves the feeding problem, prolongs the period of living in ones own house, and improves quality of life. However, SEMS has several complications and problems such as dislocation, perforation, regurgitation. These need to be resolved in the near future.
