A controlled trial of argon laser photocoagulation of retinal pigment epithelial detachments showed that no benefit was conferred on visual prognosis in the following two years. Not all untreated cases progress to damaging disciform degeneration, and treatment can adversely affect the fovea, especially by causing thinning of the neuroretina or by tearing the detached pigment epithelium.
