Summary A study carried out in 9 young patients with seemingly permanent failure of accommodation, revealed that 8 had had a severe prolonged febrile illness preceding the onset of symptoms. In each case the history was one of gradual and progressive symptoms of accommodation deterioration for between 18 months and 5 years before seeking medical advice. Effective treatment was not achieved in this group until reading correction had been prescribed in 8 patients but corrective surgery was required in one patient.
