Summary In this paper an attempt has been made to review a series of patients with ocular melanoma who have passed through Royal Prince Alfred Hospital since 1910. All the information was obtained from the medical records with additional assistance from Professor McGovern's Department of Histopathology. The three pigmentary systems were discussed. Reference is made to the average age at diagnosis and the duration and nature of symptoms prior to surgery. Tumour recurrences are discussed and the liver is found to be the commonest site of metastases. Cell type and tumour extension are found to be the important parameters prognosticate. The possible role of trauma is mentioned, and the question again arises as to whether enucleation contributes to the recurrence rate on the basis of depression of the immune system at surgery in some patients.
