Summary A medical audit was carried out on 10831 patients, presenting to an Eye Casualty Department in one year. 57% were treated (or refractive errors, 7.7% for ocular foreign bodies and 6.5% for conjunctivitis. One fifth of ocular foreign bodies were caused by grinding accidents. Defects in such a medical audit, arising from errors of input and from choice of diagnostic criteria, are discussed.
