S ummary Hereditary macular dystrophies require a battery of visual function tests and careful family investigations to establish a precise diagnosis. Sixty‐three such patients were diagnosed in the 12 months of 1976 in one retinal service. Although irreversible, the ophthalmologist must assess the prognosis and risks for other family members as well as provide for occupational guidance or rehabilitation and long‐term follow‐up.
