S ummary A total of 109 cases of proven basal cell carcinoma of the eyelid are reviewed. The tumour occurred only in Caucasians and with insignificant sex predilection, It predominantly involved the medial canthus and lower eyelid and occurred most frequently in the seventh decade. The typical patient had fair skin, brown hair and blue eyes. In half the cases the patients had no symptoms. All patients were treated surgically and the tumour was completely excised in 80% of cases at the first operation. The significance of pathologically incomplete excision of the tumour is emphasized. There was a recurrence rate of 1˙2%.
