S ummary The advent of the Ocusert R Systems for topical delivery of drugs to the eye has significantly improved the efficiency of ocular drug therapy. Similar advances will follow the introduction of other new preparations for the eye. This paper attempts to relate the development of these new methods of administering drugs to an increased understanding of factors which are involved. Intensive efforts are being made to improve the efficiency of all types of drug therapy. A definition of an efficient drug therapy is one which employs the smallest amount of drug that is necessary to produce the desired pharmacological response while minimizing the number and severity of side effects.
