At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development,\udin Rio de Janeiro, 1992, most nations endorsed the new\udConvention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD is one of\udthe most highly supported of international environmental agreements,\udwith over 190 signatory nations. Australia is one of these\udnations, and in 1996, in accordance with the CBD’s requirements,\udall Australian State and Territory governments, as well as the Commonwealth\udGovernment, endorsed The National Strategy for the\udConservation of Australia’s Biological Diversity. Although in\udsome ways a far-sighted document that has achieved significant\udadvances in biodiversity conservation in Australia, we are concerned\udthat many of the actions proposed in the 1996 strategy\udhave been poorly implemented or not implemented at all over\udthe last 12 years
