Cytomegalovirus (CMV) was isolated concurrently from an infant and her mother on the 2nd day after delivery. Restriction endonuclease cleavage analysis of viral DNAs revealed that these two CMVs were identical. Sera from the infant and mother were both positive for IgM specific to CMV and antibody against early antigen (EA). Thus, virological, serological and molecular analysis indicated the transmission of CMV from a mother to her fetus in utero .
