The rates of behavioural deviance in Japanese children attending school in England were investigated. A cross‐cultural comparison using the Rutter teachers' questionnaire was made between these Japanese children and some English children, which showed considerable similarity between the two sets. Possible additional ways teachers might identify Japanese children with deviant behaviour were described. These included teachers' ratings of “school failure,”“nurse's room user” and “not being liked by others.” The self‐concept of these Japanese children was also explored using the Piers‐ilarris children's self‐concept scale.
