Five hundred and forty three cases were collected in a nation‐wide survey and registration of the primary immunodeficiency diseases in Japan. Among them nineteen cases (3.5%) were diagnosed during the first omit month of life, including ten cases of thymic hypoplasia, four of severe combined immunodeficiency, two of Wiskott‐Aldrich syndrome, one of chronic granulomatous disease and two of Chediak‐Higashi disease. Thymic hypoplasia was diagnosed in the neonatal period so frequently that among all 26 reported cases ten (38.5%) the diagnosis was made by one month of age from characteristic complications such as tetany and congenital anomaly of the heart and great vessels.
