A single species of the subfamily Donaciinae is recognised in Australia and New Guinea: Donacia ( Cyphogaster ) australasiae Blackburn (= D. inopinata Goecke syn.n.; = D. papuana Gressitt syn.n.). The adult and larva of this species are described and the distribution illustrated. D. australasiae occurs on water‐lilies of the genera Ondinea den Hartog, Nymphaea L. and Nymphoides Séguier. A lectotype is designated for D. australasiae.
