Species‐orientated conservation programs accord priority to selected species based on values of different kinds, a process which can conflict with ideals and necessitate compromise with them in determining how restricted logistic support for conservation is to be allocated. The importance of utilitarian and intrinsic values is explored in relation to setting such priorities for insects, and approaches to selecting or nominating priority species are discussed.
