The species composition of Helicoverpa Hardwick ( Heliothis Ochsenheimer) infesting tobacco crops in far north Queensland was investigated over 5 seasons ending 1980‐81. H. armigera (Hübner) and H. punctigera Wallengren were taken regularly. H. assulta Guenée was often present, but in very low numbers. Two specimens of Heliothis rubrescens (Walker) confirmed an earlier single record from tobacco in Queensland. In each season H. armigera predominated in larval collections from July until mid‐September. H. punctigera then became dominant during late September‐October in 4 seasons, and during January in the other. Species composition on cowpea, lucerne, pumpkin and sunflower followed the tobacco pattern during the last season.
