A review is given of previous work on larval Lucanidae, and the distribution and variation in selected larval characters are presented. The relationships among the major groups of Lucanidae are discussed, with an emphasis on the more primitive genera and the application of larval characters. A key is given to the primitive genera of Lucanidae, as well as to a few of the more well defined tribes of advanced Lucaninae.
