The separation by “papering” of Nasutitermes exitiosus from broken mound material provides a sample of termites containing higher proportions of small soldiers, second to fifth stage large workers, and alates, and lower proportions of larvae, first stage workers, presoldiers, and workers near to ecdysis, than occur in the termites that remain in the mound material. These differences can be correlated with differences in the behaviour of the various castes and stages when the nest is damaged.
