
PHLEBOTOMINE SANDFLIES (DIPTERA: PSYCHODIDAE) OF THE LESSER SUNDA ISLANDS WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF TWO NEW SPECIES

The phlebotomine species known previously from Indonesia are listed. In a collection of 447 flies from 4 of the Lesser Sunda Islands, 7 taxa are recognized, including 2 described as new. Four of them, Phlebotomus argentipes Annandale and Brunetti, Sergentomyia barraudi (Sinton), S. indica (Theodor) and S. nicnic (Banks), have Oriental affinities; 2, S. queenslandi Hill [ssp. meridionalis (Tonnoir)] and S. timorica sp. n., represent an Australasian element; and the affinity of S. balica sp. n. remains uncertain. The taxonomy and the structure of the mouth‐parts in relation to probable feeding habits of these species are discussed.
