A description is given of the development and behaviour of Pristocera rufa Kieffer, an ectoparasite of the larvae of Pantorhytes szentivanyi Marshall. The host is a serious pest of cacao trees in the Northern District of Papua New Guinea. Parasitism rarely exceeded 5 per cent and the species is of minor importance in regulating populations of P. szentivanyi.
