The structure of the male genitalia of leafhoppers and the functions of the several parts are described and illustrations given of some modifications of the basic pattern. The occurrence in some male Cicadelloidea and Cercopoidea of 2‐segmented subgenital plates supports the view that these plates, and not, as has sometimes been supposed, the parameres, have been derived from the coxites and styli of the ninth abdominal segment.
