Generic diagnoses of Atrichopogon note that the scutum is bare or has only short setae. The present paper describes four new species, hystricoides, vepres, clavator , and bellicosus, in which the thoracic setae are modified into stout, erect, spine‐like structures. In one of these species there is also a unique modification of the scutellum, the central part of which is produced posteriorly into a long, spinose, rod‐like structure. In other respects the species resemble typical Atrichopogon species. From an examination of the female mouthparts it is concluded that at least one of the two species for which females are described is possibly predatory on insects.
