Cough is an important defence mechanism in clearing excessive secretions and foreign material. It also has an important role in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and is a factor in the spread of infections. Complications from cough include syncope, abdominal hernias, incontinence and pneumomediastinum. Cough is the most common complaint for which patients seek medical attention; and is the second most common reason for a medical examination in the United States of America. The annual cost of treatment for cough in the USA is over $1 billion annually.
