The following are reports of two families with the so-called benign familial neonatal convulsions (BFNC). In the first, 9 out of 35 members of 2 generations of the family experienced convulsions in the neonatal period and/or in early infancy. One member has had mild mental retardation and epilepsy with rolandic EEG foci, but the other 8 members have had good prognoses. In the other, three out of four members of 2 generations of the family experienced neonatal and febrile convulsions in early infancy. Including these 12 cases, reports on BFNC were reviewed, especially for prognoses after 7 years of age. Of the 63 cases which showed the prognoses after 7 years of age, 12 (19%) were of probable epilepsy (i.e. those who developed afebrile convulsions) and 2 cases of death (details are unknown). The presumed benignancy of BFNC should, therefore, be reevaluated, and define it with further follow-up data.
