Summary A case has been presented in which EEG desynchronization in deep coma followed lesions of the middle pontine structures. The involvement of the middle pontine structures was confirMed by the pathological findings. The authors conclude therefore that the middle pontine structures have the neuronal functions of influencing cortical potentials and inducing EEG desynchronization.
