S ummary1) The literature was reviewed as to the persistence of various embryonic anastomoses between the carotid and vertebro‐basilar arterial system, viz. persistent trigeminal. otic, hypoglossal and proatlantal artery, and the persistence of the embryonal cervical segmental arteries. 2) A case of persistent proatlantal artery demonstrated angiographically in a 6‐year‐old mentally deficient boy was reported. 3) Clinical significance of the carotid‐basilar anastomoses was discussed in relation to subarachnoid hemorrhage, aneurysm (or angioma) and cerebral dysfunction.
