Summary: Confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) has the potential to provide new insights into matrix deposition in renal pathology. For example laser stimulated light emission from Kimmelstiel Wilson (KW) nodules emphasizes a difference between peripheral and central nodule contents, an observation matching immunoperoxidase studies, which fails to demonstrate high density of renal matrix proteins in the core.
