Summary: The most potent endogenous vasoconstrictors described, the endothelins, exert a variety of effects in the kidney, but their true pathophysiological role remains elusive. This review describes the renal endothelin system with special reference to man, discusses some pharmacological tools for its investigation, and outlines its potential pathophysiological involvement.
