Summary: Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) has potential applications in the fields of embryology, anatomy, physiology and pathology of the kidney. This review focuses upon the principles of confocal microscopy and the ways in which this new technology may affect nephrological diagnostic pathology.
