Senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT) is a hetero‐genous entity and can be grouped into different categories based on clinicopathological characteristics. Although the presence of senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and neuronal loss throughout the cerebral cortices plays an important role in the development of SDAT, the presence of these structures is not essential. Sociopsychological factors should also be considered as important factors in the development of SDAT in subjects over 80 years of age.
