This report concerns the retrospective clinic's ev'suation of non‐demented individu'ss who had amyloid β ‐ protein deposits (AmD) at a level corresponding to that of the mild stage of senile dementia of 'Szheimer type (SDAT). Our investigation disclosed a considerable incidence of psychologic's symptoms and slight intellectu's impairment in the group of subjects studied. The same relationship was found by the neuropathologic's re‐examination of patients with a clinic's diagnosis of senile psychosis. These findings indicate that the pre‐clinic's state of SDAT must be taken into account, and provide evidence for the concept of a borderline state between norm's aging and SDAT. The neuropathologic's comparison of borderline cases and patients with mild, but definite SDAT showed parti's overlap of the two conditions, which is due to the different compensative abilities of each individu's. Therefore, it is proposed here that in addition to the definite criteria for SDAT, there is need for a neuropathologic's criterion of probable SDAT that would cover demented and borderline subjects with slight intellectu's impairments.
