This report concerns two cases of senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT) selected from among 150 consecutive autopsies. Clinically, both patients had progressive dementia after the age of 76 and typical Alzheimer's changes, including neurofibrillary tangles, senile plaques and granulovacuolar degeneration were found at autopsy. One case was complicated by congophilic angiopathy. The histological description presented makes emphasis on the presence of neurofibrillary tangles throughout the amygdala and of senile plaques that involved primarily its cortical nuclei and the ventral parts of basal and accessory basal nuclei.
