Adequate nutrition is essential for normal growth during childhood. This is so important that the United Nations has included ‘provision of adequate nutrition’ in their International Declaration of the Rights of the Child. For paediatricians, satisfactory growth is the most important, practical indicator of adequate nutrition but growth is affected by other genetic and environmental factors, particularly repeated or chronic infection.
