. Recent warnings have been reported in the Press about the lack of improvement in Australia's perinatal mortality rate and the relative decline in Australia's position among the countries with the most favourable perinatal mortality rates. Such warnings are based on a false interpretation of recent and past perinatal mortality statistics. Australia's perinatal mortality rate has declined and is continuing to decline in recent years. Further, there is no evidence to suggest that Australia's perinatal mortality position has altered over the last fifteen years and continues to be very favourable by international standards.
