. The problems of diagnosing and treating hyperactive children are described. Because there are no objective criteria for diagnosis and hyperactive children are difficult to differentiate from children with a variety of behavioural problems, it is suggested that the term currently has little meaning. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the problems of the children and their families is emphasized, together with intervention in the school as well as at home. Drug and diet treatments are deemed to be of little help in the long term, and alternatives to physical methods of treatment are suggested.
